In The Studio w/ Joyous Wolf

Joyous Wolf just wrapped the recording of their debut major label record, and I was fortunate enough to be in the studio with them to document the process. It was incredible to see everything come together, and to have the opportunity to capture these moments for a group of guys that I'm stoked to call friends.

The highlight of the recording process for me was the time spent at LEGENDARY Sunset Sound in Hollywood. Being in the same room that some of my all time favorite records were made, (some of those being the among the greatest records EVER recorded!) was nothing short of surreal. Everything from Van Halen and Led Zeppelin II, to Purple Rain and Pet Sounds were recorded there, and seeing these guys become a part of that history was amazing.

The second stage of recording (and mixing) was done at Howard Benson's West Valley Recording Studios in Woodland Hills. I love the vibe at Howard's place; it's a total 180 from Sunset Blvd, which is by no means a bad thing. The energy is undeniable, and Howard has produced countless multi-platinum records there. I dig this place especially, because in a lot of cases, the bands stay in the living area of the studio for the duration of the their projects. This makes for a sort of creative cohesion that isn't easily attained in other spaces. With Howard at the helm, and the legend Mike Plotnikoff at the board, I was geeking out on these jaw-dropping sounds they were coming up with that were unbelievably massive. I also had to do my best to not drool over the in-house amp collection which is second to none (especially for guitar nerds like myself). It's crazy to think of some of your favorite songs, then think about what it must have been like to be in the room with the creators of those songs, the very first time they heard the final recorded mixes that ended up on the record. Being able to experience that moment with these guys was indescribable.
